Design

All Loftus Designs furnishings are original creations, designed to provide unique studio-style furniture that is practical, affordable, and durable enough for everyday use in your home. Our extensive design process ensures that each furnishing reflects our commitment to quality and value. In addition to unique styling, all furnishings in our portfolio are child-safe, sturdy, easy to care for, and comfortable. The attention given to even the smallest details ensures that your Loftus Designs original will be a treasured furnishing in your home for years to come.

Wood

All structural components of Loftus Designs custom made furniture is constructed from solid wood - no MDF or particle board. Note: A few decorative (non-structural) components of our children' s novelty beds are made from MDF. Our custom wood furniture are available in your choice of three popular hardwood species: Oak, Maple, and Poplar. In addition to our standard selections, other hardwoods are available including birch, cherry, mahogany, and walnut. Exotic hardwoods are also available. Most of our furnishing cases are built using ¾" hardwood plywood. There are several benefits of using solid sheets of hardwood plywood rather than individual pieces of wood glued together for our hand crafted furniture. Hardwood plywood is more economical, environmentally conscious, and stable against environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. All other non-structural components of our fine custom furniture are made from solid hardwood. If you prefer, we can make your entire custom wood furniture from solid hardwood with an additional labor charge. Your design consultant can provide more information and discuss your hardwood options with you on your hand crafted furniture.

Construction

All structural components of Loftus Designs custom made furniture are assembled using a system of glue, screw and dado construction. Screws are covered with face grain wood plugs. All shelves are securely mounted within the furnishing case in dado slots with additional support along the length of the shelf as needed to ensure that shelves won't bow when fully loaded. All drawers are made of ½" Baltic Birch using a locking slot joint. We have found this joint to be extremely durable, however if you prefer traditional dovetailed drawers; we will gladly make them for you for an additional charge of $25 per drawer. After construction, all items are sanded to meet our strict quality standards and then sent on for finishing on all our fine custom furniture.

Finish

Loftus Designs uses finishing products that are environmentally friendly, water-based and child-safe. Both our paint and stain with polyurethane finishes resist peeling, blistering, and fading, and provide a finish that is washable so that you can easily remove household stains and dirt. A variety of specialty finishes are also available. The finish you select is guided by the hardwood species you select.

Hardware

Loftus Designs uses the most child safe and durable hardware available.

Drawer Slides
All drawers feature Blum's Eurostyle low profile, epoxy coated, heavy gauge steel slides. These side-mounted slides are among the quietest and smoothest on the market. The self-closing feature keeps that "almost but not quite closed" appearance from detracting from your furnishing's good looks. This style of drawer slide is much more durable than wood on wood or metal on wood slides. To help avoid injury, these slides have a built-in stop to help prevent the drawer from accidentally being pulled out of the unit. Our slides are rated to provide smooth operation up to 100 pounds.

Hinges
All wood doors are installed using Blum's Eurostyle, hidden hinges. The hinges snap-closing feature eliminates the need for additional catches and also keeps that "almost but not quite closed" appearance from detracting from your furnishing's good looks. The hinge's three-way adjustment allows each door to be uniformly aligned to its cabinetry.

Knobs and Handles
During our extensive design process, we select the knobs and handles that best enhance the overall look of the piece. However, if you would like to further individualize your furnishing, a vast array of decorative hardware is available. Ask your Design Consultant about additional hardware options.

Toy Chests
All Loftus Designs' toy chests feature durable, no-slam lid supports. Lids are mounted to the boxes using full-length piano hinges. The use of piano hinges helps prevent the hinge from working loose over time as can happen when only two small hinges are used.

Adjustable Shelving
Our adjustable shelving uses an attractive pin and sleeve system rather than a visually prominent rail. Our ¼" shelf support pins mount in attractive ¼" round sleeves for additional strength, giving a sleek finished look to the shelving system and the furnishing overall. Pins and sleeves are available in gold, silver, antique, and black.

Other Hardware and Accessories
Loftus Designs uses a variety of other high performance specialty hardware for glass door systems, pocket doors, full-extension drawers, drop-down keyboard drawers, computer and printer pull-out shelves, file drawers, video and CD storage, power cord and ventilation grommets, Lazy Susan swivels, home entertainment components and more.

Lighting and sound systems are also available.

Product Safety

All Loftus Designs Furnishings are built to meet or exceed Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.

Toy Chests
All Loftus Designs' toy chests feature no-slam lid supports and a ¾" finger space around the top to avoid hurting little fingers. Finger space also provides ventilation in case of accidental entrapment.

Beds
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission recommends that loft beds and top bunks not be used by children under six years of age.

Finishing Products
Loftus Designs uses only water-based paints, stains and polyurethanes which are completely non-toxic and child safe.

Hardware
Loftus Designs uses the most child safe and durable hardware available.

Our drawer slides are designed with a built-in stop to help prevent drawers from being accidentally pulled completely out of the furnishing.

Tip Resistance
Because kids will be kids, all of our furnishings are designed to be tip-resistant. Our play tables and chairs are given extra design attention to avoid tipping. We will recommend that some designs that are either extra tall, top-heavy or like bookcases simply appear as an invitation to climb, be securely attached to a wall. More information will be provided if this is recommended for your furnishing.
